The defining data point of Mother's Day 2026 isn't the $38 billion spent or the 30% surge in restaurant reservations. It's a single line from an Optimove consumer survey that landed late last week: 49% of Mother's Day shoppers said they regularly used AI tools for gift recommendations and shopping ideas, according to Yahoo Finance's writeup of the research. Sixty-four percent of those AI-assisted shoppers also said they were open to buying from a brand they'd never tried.

That second number is the one that should keep brand managers awake. AI tools aren't just speeding up gift discovery — they're systematically demoting brand loyalty as a purchase filter.

Why this Mother's Day mattered

For 18 months, every retail technology vendor has been promising that "agentic commerce" — AI agents acting on the user's behalf to research, compare, and increasingly transact — was months, not years, away. Until Sunday, that claim was hard to verify. The agentic-commerce frame existed at NRF's Big Show in January; it filled keynote slides at Shoptalk in March; it appeared in earnings calls every quarter. What it didn't have was a holiday-scale validation event with shopper-side data.

Sunday provided it. eMarketer's pre-holiday research found that price and AI were the two factors driving Mother's Day shoppers to spend more — a striking pairing, since one of those factors (price sensitivity) was supposed to constrain the other (AI-recommended trade-up purchases). The reconciliation is that AI tools are surfacing both premium options and lower-cost alternatives the shopper hadn't considered. The net effect on average order value isn't down — it's up.

Shopify's agentic infrastructure quietly became the plumbing

The story underneath the consumer-side adoption number is the infrastructure that made it possible. Shopify announced Agentic Storefronts at its Winter '26 Edition, giving millions of merchants the ability to be discovered and transacted-against inside ChatGPT, Perplexity, Microsoft Copilot, and any other AI assistant that adopts the Universal Commerce Protocol launched in January. The product math, per Shopify: AI-driven traffic to Shopify stores has grown 8x year-over-year, and orders originating from AI-powered searches have grown 15x.

Modern Retail's reporting sharpened the strategic context: OpenAI quietly retrenched on its own Instant Checkout product earlier this spring, ceding the merchant-side rails to Shopify rather than building competing infrastructure. That's a meaningful concession. It means the agentic-commerce stack has effectively standardized — assistants live at OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, and Microsoft; the merchant rails live at Shopify and (for Walmart, Target, Wayfair, and the marketplaces) at the UCP coalition.

Fast Company's reporting on Google and OpenAI's agentic-commerce race framed the tipping point as "months, not years" away. With half of Mother's Day shoppers already using these tools regularly, "months" probably already passed.

What this means for retailers

Three operational shifts are now urgent rather than aspirational.

Discoverability inside AI assistants has become the new SEO problem. When 49% of shoppers' Mother's Day journey starts in ChatGPT or Perplexity instead of Google, the question shifts from "do we rank on Google for 'best Mother's Day jewelry under $200'" to "do we appear in ChatGPT's response when a user asks the same question." The answer depends on whether your product feed is exposed via the UCP standard, whether your brand is referenced in the AI's training and retrieval corpus, and whether your structured data is clean enough for an agent to parse. Most mid-market brands fail all three tests right now.

For incumbents — particularly in categories like jewelry, beauty, and apparel — that's a defensive emergency. The retail-media networks that just ate open-web display advertising now face a new disintermediation risk. Endcap reported on Friday that The Trade Desk had crashed 13% after analysts called out the structural shift of ad dollars into Amazon, Walmart Connect, and Target's Roundel. But if agentic-commerce traffic continues to grow at 8x year-over-year, a meaningful share of purchase decisions is being made before the shopper ever lands on the retail-media network's surface. The hard transaction data is going to come from two places over the next 30 days: Shopify's Q1 earnings (already reported, but watch for management commentary on agentic share of orders in their guidance updates), and Amazon's next quarterly print, where Rufus and the new agentic shopping features will get their first holiday-scale read. Those numbers will tell us whether 49% of shoppers using AI tools became 5%, 10%, or 20% of dollars actually flowing through agentic checkout.

Either way, the trajectory is now clear. Mother's Day 2026 is the holiday where agentic commerce stopped being a deck-slide claim and started being a measurable line on the shopper-journey diagram. Retailers that aren't yet structured to be findable, comparable, and transactable inside an AI assistant have one window — between now and Black Friday — to fix it.
