Ulta Beauty reports first-quarter fiscal 2026 results after Tuesday's close, with management hosting the 4:30 p.m. CT investor call. The Zacks consensus is calling for revenue of $3.08 billion (+8.2% year over year) and EPS of $6.87 (+2.5% YoY). Both numbers are achievable. Whether they're enough is a different question.
Three things will dictate whether the stock holds or repeats the 4%-plus post-earnings hangover from March. First is the Rare Beauty launch. Selena Gomez's brand began rolling into Ulta doors at the very start of fiscal 2026 and represents the most significant prestige cosmetics exclusive Ulta has pulled away from Sephora in three years. Management telegraphed "strong early demand" on the Q4 call — meaning anything short of an explicit, sized-up contribution number will read as a soft pull. Second is K-beauty and prestige fragrance, which Ulta has positioned as the long-tail offset to mass-market cosmetics weakness. Both categories were running positive at year-end, but the wider beauty category is decelerating and E.l.f. Beauty's recent guide-down spooked the sector.
The third — and probably most important — variable is SG&A. Ulta's Q4 report in March showed SG&A jumping 23.0% as the company front-loaded incentive comp and "strategic investments." The stock got punished even though revenue beat. Management essentially asked the Street to accept a year of margin compression in exchange for category share gains. That bargain works only if comps actually inflect — and Q1 is the first quarter where the investments are supposed to start paying back.
The competitive set is doing Ulta no favors. Sephora — which is rolling into more Kohl's locations and quietly testing prestige price laddering — has been the share-take story of the past three quarters. Amazon's Premium Beauty store is widening its prestige catalog (Coty, Olaplex and now Estée Lauder lines are all in), and the Ulta-loyal "open-shelf" customer is the exact one Amazon is courting. Walmart, meanwhile, is running its own Wellness & Beauty remodel in 650+ stores and is now partnering with Adobe on agentic discovery that competes for the bottom of the prestige funnel.
The longer-arc question is whether Ulta's "we are the cosmetics destination" moat still functions in an agentic-shopping world. If 45% of shoppers are already using AI for some portion of the purchase journey — the IBM Institute number from January's NRF — and if Sephora, Amazon and Walmart are all building their own assistants, Ulta has to either build an equivalent or accept becoming the back-end of someone else's. CEO Kecia Steelman has signaled the company is investing in the technology stack, but Ulta has not yet shown the Street what its agentic answer looks like.
What to listen for on tonight's call: a specific Rare Beauty sized contribution; SG&A guide for the back half of the year; any update on the agentic-shopping roadmap; and whether the consumer commentary lines up with what Dollar General said this morning — namely that the high-end consumer is holding up while the value end is fraying. Ulta's customer mix is largely the former. The Q1 print, more than any other this season, is a litmus test for whether the "K-shaped consumer" narrative has actually hit beauty.
Numbers print at 4:00 p.m. ET. The call is 4:30 p.m. CT.
